First Notes

Pre- piano program for 5 to 7 years

Specially designed to bridge the gap between musical play classes and a more formal music education, First Notes is a fun approach to musical literacy.

At First Notes, your child will experience a variety of musical styles, tempos beats and tones, while she learns about music "hands on", through musical games, and age appropriate activities, such as:

  • drumming and other percussion instrument play
  • vocal exploration, singing and tonal patterning
  • ensemble play, choral singing
  • ear training
  • basic graphic notation
  • creative movement / learning about music through movement

First Notes is a 32 week program, starting in September, and ending in June. Classes are 1 hour each week. Parents or care givers join in for sharing time, during the last 15 minutes of each class.

Please note that children must turn 5 by September 30 to attend this program.

The advantages of joining the First Notes class include:

  • building of memory and symbolic thinking skills
  • a musical foundation that transfers to further music lessons (piano, violin, drums, etc.)
  • increased co-ordination, and a stronger connection between body and voice
  • building of social skills and co-operation , from ensemble work
  • ***studies show that musical activities help to build the areas of the brain responsible for mathematics, early reading and language development

Concepts learned in First Notes provide the foundation for many of the lessons learned in our group keyboard program for 6-9 year olds.

Currently this program is running at our Coquitlam location only. Plans to add classes at the North Shore location for fall 2008 are under way.

Birthday Parties are also available for this age group.
